Crossword games might not be too popular among the younger generation, but back before smartphones and computers were a thing, there were newspaper crossword puzzles. CodyCross takes you back to those days with a word-finding game that always entertains.

Plot - 4.5/5

CodyCross is an alien that has crash-landed on Earth. As its chosen companion, you journey together through history and time filling out crosswords that reveal our past and history. There are plenty of themed puzzles, and there is also an opening tutorial which helps anyone who isn’t familiar with the crossword genre. The puzzles are quite challenging, but you can also learn a lot from them. Unlike the old newspaper crosswords that required pencil and eraser, in CodyCross you can simply touch the ‘back’ button to erase your answer.

Each puzzle provides several clues which you can use if you’re stuck, with vertical clues highlighted in red. Some of the already given clues are themselves a tad confusing, but once you play and unlock more challenges, you catch the drift. Each day you are given money in the form of tokens which you get when you complete specific tasks, or you can just purchase them with real money.

Visuals - 4.5/5

CodyCross keeps you entertained with cool and vibrant visuals which strike the perfect balance for this type of game. The dashboard is colorful and beautifully designed, and there are multiple special effects that all add to the vibrancy of the game. Generally, the user interface is sleek and responsive, and the hint system which flashes to assist you during hard rounds is a welcome addition to the game.

Replay Value - 5/5

In terms of content, CodyCross offers much to work with, and you’ll never get bored with the game. It has hundreds of levels, and you can select your preferences from the various difficulty levels. The hint system definitely keeps lots of players from being overwhelmed, and it isn’t done excessively. Finding words quickly also provides lots of rewards, which is an incentive to play more and unlock more puzzles.

Controls - 4.5/5

Creating a word requires that you tap on the associated letter on the in-game keyboard. A question prompt will appear on-screen which then awaits a corresponding text input answer from the player. This is a relatively simple process. The hint system which flashes makes the experience even more intuitive. If you make a mistake in your spelling, you could always hit the ‘back’ button and make a correction. Making settings adjustments is as simple as tapping.

CodyCross is a mobile game that stays true to the puzzle genre. It is captivating especially because the game has a massive database of words which never seems to run out. There are hundreds of different word categories, and you can change the difficulty settings, which makes the game always riveting and exciting. While you can unlock more content through micro-transactions, the game offers enough to keep you playing it for weeks without spending a dime.
